Rachel Brune > Soldiers of the 800th MP Brigade at Camp Bucca, Iraq, walk past vehicles belonging to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) during one of their regular visits to the camp in March, 2003. The ICRC visited the camps as a third party to ensure the Geneva Convention regulations were being met. They continued in this capacity until about September, 2003, when insurgent terrorists targeted their headquarters in Baghdad.
Rachel Brune > Sitting atop an up-armored HUMVEE, SAW (squad assault weapon) at the ready, this female military police soldier prepares to go out on a mission. SPC Morrison is a member of the 320th MP Company, stationed with the 800th MP Brigade headquarters in Baghdad, Iraq.
Rachel Brune > SPC Commerford, 299th MP CO, patrols an area of detainee operations at Baghdad Central Corrections Facility. BCCF is located on the site of the former Abu Ghuraib prison, which under the Saddam Hussein regime was a notorious hole. The doors of the death chamber are now silent, the buildings are being reconstructed more in accordance with humane prison standards, and the area is now under CPA jurisdiction. This picture has been cleared for publishing.
Rachel Brune > ECP at a Baghdad prison. Note the Iraqi corrections guards working the crowd with the MP.
Rachel Brune > Mr. Abdulhady Raheem Muhsen, Iraqi judo champion, uses Sgt. Enrique Navarro, 800th MP BDE military policeman, to demonstrate a disarming technique during the self-defense course of corrections guard training at the Al Hillah Regional Training Academy.
Rachel Brune > 1LT Elvis Mabry, BG Paul Hil, COL Alan Ecke and an unidentified engineer survey the spot for the future Camp Bucca in March of 2003. Bucca was the main EPW camp during Operation Iraqi Freedom, but when this picture was taken, it was a big plain with a lot of scrub and a couple of camels. Picture cleared for release.
Rachel Brune > Chaplain (Maj.) Winters, 800th MP BDE, takes a shot of Saddam Hussein's palace as it broods over the 6,000-year-old ruins of Nebuchadnezzar's palace complex (foreground) at Babylon, Iraq. Hussein, who sponsored much of the reconstruction at the site, fancied himself a modern-day Nebuchadnezzar, inserting special bricks with his seal in the rebuilt walls and building the palace at a higher point than any of the ruins themselves.
Rachel Brune > On a foggy early morning in Baghdad, a military policeman from the 79th MP Company grabs a snack. The troops were escorting the command staff through the Baghdad prison facilities that the brigade is helping to stand up as part of reconstruction efforts here.
Rachel Brune > One of our escort MPs waiting for command staff at one of the Baghdad prisons.
